Rage bait refers to content deliberately designed to provoke anger in whoever encounters it, on the understanding that angry reactions, replies, and shares still count as engagement regardless of whether that engagement is positive or negative in tone toward whatever was actually being said or shown.
The term distinguishes this specific tactic from content that provokes anger purely incidentally rather than by design. Rage bait is built with that reaction as the intended outcome from the start, structured around a claim or framing calculated to draw a response rather than to genuinely inform or entertain anyone watching it.
Recognising rage bait as a distinct category, rather than reacting to each instance individually as it appears, helps separate the manipulation from the substance underneath. This makes it easier to notice when a post's real purpose is generating a reaction rather than making any genuine point worth engaging with at all, once the pattern is named clearly.
