Context collapse describes exactly what happens when content built for one specific audience ends up being seen by a completely different one instead, stripped of the shared understanding that made it make sense in its original setting to the people it was actually written for in the first place.
A joke aimed at a small group of friends, once screenshotted and shared far beyond that group, loses the context that made it readable as a joke at all in the first place, sometimes being read instead as a sincere or even alarming statement by an audience who never had the missing background.
This is a persistent risk on platforms where content can travel far beyond its original audience with nothing more than a single share, since the same words can carry entirely different meanings depending on who exactly is reading them and what they already happen to understand about the situation.
