A meme format is simply the reusable structure sitting underneath a meme itself, the part that stays consistent across many different versions even as the specific joke placed inside it changes from one post to the next along the way it continues to circulate widely across a given, particular community of users.
Formats can be visual, like a specific image paired with adjustable text placed over it, or structural, like a familiar joke pattern that works regardless of subject matter entirely. What defines a format is not its content but its shape, the part other people can recognise and reuse freely for themselves.
Understanding the format as separate from any single instance of it explains why a meme can feel endlessly fresh despite following the same underlying template every single time it appears. The pleasure often lives in seeing a known shape filled with an unexpected new idea nobody quite predicted seeing.
