What Lurking Means

Lurking describes the act of following and reading content within an online community without posting or otherwise actively participating, remaining a consistent but silent observer rather than a visible, engaged contributor to the ongoing conversation. Most communities, even active ones, are made up largely of people who never post anything visible at all.
Lurkers often make up a significant portion of any given community's actual audience, even though their presence remains largely invisible, since most platforms make it easy to observe without leaving any obvious trace of that observation behind. Very little about that quiet presence ever shows up in the numbers a casual visitor might notice.
The term carries no particular negative connotation within most communities, since lurking is widely understood as a normal, common way of engaging, particularly for anyone still becoming familiar with a space before choosing to participate more actively. Plenty of lurkers eventually become active contributors once they feel comfortable enough with the space to join in.
