What Engagement Actually Means
Launch library · evergreen read

Engagement is a broad term covering any action a viewer takes in response to content: liking, commenting, sharing, saving, or simply watching for longer than expected. Platforms use it as a rough proxy for how much a piece of content actually mattered to the people who saw it, even when that mattering was fairly brief or incidental.
Not all engagement is treated equally. A comment generally signals more than a like, and a share sent privately can signal more than a public one, because each action requires a different amount of effort and reveals a different depth of interest from the viewer taking that particular action.
Understanding engagement helps explain why creators sometimes seem to chase reactions rather than pure quality. On most platforms, the path to being shown to more people runs directly through generating measurable engagement, whatever form that takes, which shapes decisions well beyond what any single piece of content might suggest on its own.
