Defining a Burner Account

A burner account is a secondary, often temporary account created specifically to allow someone to post or interact without it being tied back to their primary, more established identity, typically used for privacy or to avoid consequences attached to a main account. Privacy, rather than deception for its own sake, is usually the more ordinary reason someone creates one.
These accounts are often used deliberately for a single specific purpose, then abandoned once that purpose has been served, distinguishing them from a simple secondary account maintained consistently over a longer period for an ongoing, separate reason. Once its narrow purpose has been served, many are simply left dormant rather than actively maintained further.
The term reflects the disposable nature of the account itself, treated as something to use briefly and then discard, rather than as a lasting part of someone's broader, sustained online presence. That temporary quality is really what separates a burner from an ordinary, sustained secondary account.
