Defining a Shadow Limit

A shadow limit, in short, is a reduction in a post or account's overall visibility applied quietly by a platform, without any explicit notice given to the person actually affected. This leaves the account technically active but reaching a noticeably smaller audience than it normally would.
The term is often used fairly loosely to describe any unexplained drop in reach that a creator happens to notice, even though platforms themselves rarely confirm exactly when or why such limits are actually applied. This keeps the whole concept somewhat contested despite being widely referenced by creators.
As a piece of shared vocabulary, it captures a specific frustration familiar to many creators across different platforms: content that remains visible and technically unremoved, yet somehow reaches far fewer people than a similar post from before once genuinely did. That ambiguity is itself part of the frustration, since there is rarely a clear, confirmable answer either way.
