A callout post publicly names and criticises a specific person or account, typically in response to behaviour the poster considers problematic, using public visibility as a form of accountability rather than addressing the issue through private conversation. Visibility, rather than private conversation, is treated here as the actual mechanism for holding someone accountable.
This format relies heavily on collective attention to function as intended, since its impact usually depends on how widely it spreads and how many other accounts choose to engage with or amplify the original criticism being raised. That reliance on spread means a callout can gain or lose momentum almost entirely outside its author's control.
Because a callout post operates in public and often spreads quickly, it can be difficult to correct or contextualise later, which is part of why the format remains genuinely contested within many online communities. Once a post has already travelled widely, adding context afterward rarely reaches the same audience that saw the original.
