Defining a Screenshot Repost

A screenshot repost involves capturing a static image of a post, often from a different platform entirely, and sharing that image as new content, typically without any direct link back to the original source it was captured from. The image itself is often the only part of the original post that survives the process intact.
This differs meaningfully from a native reshare, since a screenshot strips away the interactive elements, like a clickable profile or an embedded link, that would normally make finding the original creator straightforward for anyone encountering the repost. Anyone wanting to trace it back to its source is left with very little to actually work from.
The term is often used with a slightly critical connotation, since screenshot reposting is one of the more common ways attribution gets lost, even when the person sharing the screenshot did not necessarily intend to obscure where it came from. Choosing a native reshare over a screenshot, where possible, avoids this particular problem entirely.
