A simple, practical habit genuinely worth building deliberately over time is checking whether a claim actually appears from at least one other separate, independent source before sharing it further with anyone else, rather than relying on a single post as though it were sufficient confirmation entirely on its own merits alone.
This does not need to be an exhaustive investigation every single time something appears. Even a quick search to see whether other accounts or outlets are reporting the same thing, in roughly the same way, can catch a surprising number of claims that do not hold up under that light scrutiny.
The habit matters most for claims that feel emotionally satisfying to believe without question, since those are exactly the claims people are least inclined to double check, and exactly the ones most likely to spread regardless of whether they turn out to be accurate at all in the end.
