The Out of Context Clip Problem
Launch library · evergreen read

A clip removed from its surrounding conversation can support almost any interpretation a poster wants to attach to it afterward, since the missing context that would normally clarify meaning is exactly what has been stripped away before the clip ever started circulating more widely online.
This problem is particularly effective as a tactic because the clip itself is genuine footage, which lends it a credibility that a purely fabricated claim would obviously lack. Even though the meaning attached to it may have very little to do with what was actually happening at the time.
Seeking the fuller original, the minutes before and after a suspicious clip, is usually the most reliable way to test whether the attached interpretation actually holds up once the surrounding context is fully restored to the moment being shown. Without that fuller picture, almost any confident reading of a short, isolated clip should be treated with real caution.
