An engagement farming question is designed specifically to generate replies regardless of whether it produces any meaningful conversation at all, often posing something deliberately simple, divisive, or obvious enough that almost anyone feels compelled to weigh in immediately without much real thought. The question is rarely the point, generating a large volume of quick, low effort replies is the actual goal.
These questions frequently avoid genuine ambiguity on purpose, since real ambiguity might discourage a quick, confident reply from most viewers. Instead they lean on topics where most people already have an instant, easy opinion ready to share without needing to think carefully about it first.
Recognising this pattern does not mean every single question posted online is manipulative in nature, but a question that seems engineered purely to maximise replies, rather than to explore a genuine uncertainty, is usually worth noticing for exactly what it actually is doing. Noticing that design does not require cynicism about every question, only a bit more care before responding automatically.
