Recognising Comparison Spirals
Launch library · evergreen read

A comparison spiral begins with a single moment of measuring your own life against a curated glimpse of someone else's, and can quickly deepen into a longer, more corrosive pattern of continued comparison that rarely reflects an accurate picture of either life involved. The comparison itself is rarely fair, since one side is always a carefully selected highlight.
What makes this spiral particularly persistent online is the sheer volume of curated content available to compare against, offering an almost endless supply of highlight moments that were never representative of anyone's ordinary, unfiltered daily experience in the first place. That volume makes the spiral easy to fall into again and again, almost without noticing it happening.
Recognising the spiral early, noticing the shift from simple observation into a spiral of ongoing comparison, creates an opportunity to step back before the pattern fully takes hold and starts shaping mood well beyond the original moment that triggered it. A brief pause at the very start of that pattern is often enough to interrupt it before it deepens.
