Hashtags once worked mainly as a search tool, letting people find every post tagged around a shared topic of interest. Their role has shifted considerably, and on many platforms they now matter more as a categorisation signal for the algorithm than as something viewers actively click through themselves anymore.

A relevant hashtag can help a system understand what a post is about, particularly for new accounts without much history for the algorithm to draw on. Irrelevant or overly broad hashtags, by contrast, can confuse that categorisation rather than helping the system understand the content correctly from the start.

Despite predictions of their decline, hashtags remain useful in a narrower, more technical sense: less a way to be found by curious browsers, more a label that helps a system decide which audience a post is most likely to genuinely suit and reach effectively over time, even without a single curious click.
